    ΕΛΕΩι ΘΕΟΥ ΑΡΧΙΕΠΙΣΚΟΠΟΣ ΚΩΝΣΤΑΝΤΙΝΟΥΠΟΛΕΩΣ

    ΝΕΑΣ ΡΩΜΗΣ ΚΑΙ ΟΙΚΟΥΜΕΝΙΚΟΣ ΠΑΤΡΙΑΡΧΗΣ

    ΠΑΝΤΙ Τῼ ΠΛΗΡΩΜΑΤΙ ΤΗΣ ΕΚΚΛΗΣΙΑΣ ΧΑΡΙΝ, ΕΙΡΗΝΗΝ ΚΑΙ ΕΛΕΟΣ ΠΑΡΑ ΤΟΥ ΔΗΜΙΟΥΡΓΟΥ ΠΑΣΗΣ ΤΗΣ ΚΤΙΣΕΩΣ

    ΚΥΡΙΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΘΕΟΥ ΚΑΙ ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ ΗΜΩΝ ΙΗΣΟΥ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥ

    * * *

    Τιμιώτατοι ἀδελφοί Ἱεράρχαι καί προσφιλέστατα τέκνα ἐν Κυρίῳ,

    Εὐδοκίᾳ τοῦ Ἀρχηγοῦ καί Τελειωτοῦ τῆς πίστεως ἡμῶν, εἰσερχόμεθα σήμερον εἰς τό νέον ἐκκλησιαστικόν ἔτος καί ἑορτάζομεν ἐν ψαλμοῖς καί ὕμνοις, διά τριακοστήν πέμπτην φοράν, τήν Ἡμέραν προστασίας τοῦ φυσικοῦ περιβάλλοντος.

    Χαιρόμεθα διά τήν ἀπήχησιν τῶν οἰκολογικῶν πρωτοβουλιῶν τοῦ Οἰκουμενικοῦ Πατριαρχείου ὄχι μόνον εἰς τόν χριστιανικόν κόσμον, ἀλλά καί εἰς ἄλλας θρησκείας, εἰς κοινοβούλια καί πολιτικούς, εἰς τόν χῶρον τῆς κοινωνίας τῶν πολιτῶν, τῆς ἐπιστήμης, τῶν οἰκολογικῶν κινημάτων καί τῆς νεολαίας. Οὕτως ἤ ἄλλως, ἡ οἰκολογική κρίσις, ὡς παγκόσμιον πρόβλημα, μόνον μέ παγκόσμιον εὐαισθητοποίησιν καί κινητοποίησιν δύναται νά ἀντιμετωπισθῇ.

    Ἐκφράζομεν ἐπίσης τήν ἱκανοποίησιν μας, ἐπειδή ἔχει ὁριστικῶς κατανοηθῆ ἡ ἄμεσος συνάφεια οἰκολογικῶν καί κοινωνικῶν προβλημάτων, καί δή τό γεγονός ὅτι ἡ καταστροφή τοῦ φυσικοῦ περιβάλλοντος θίγει πρωτίστως τούς πτωχούς τῆς γῆς. Ὁ συνδυασμός περιβαλλοντικῶν καί κοινωνικῶν δράσεων ἀποτελεῖ ἐλπίδα διά τό μέλλον, ἐφ᾿ ὅσον μόνον τότε ὑπάρχει βιώσιμος ἀνάπτυξις καί πρόοδος, ὅταν μεριμνῶμεν συγχρόνως διά τήν ἀκεραιότητα τῆς δημιουργίας καί τήν προστασίαν τῆς ἀξιοπρεπείας καί τῶν δικαιωμάτων τοῦ ἀνθρώπου.

    Εἶναι χαρακτηριστικόν, ὅτι τονίζεται σήμερον ἡ ἀναγκαιότης μιᾶς «οἰκολογικῆς διευρύνσεως» τῶν δικαιωμάτων τοῦ ἀνθρώπου. Γίνεται μάλιστα λόγος περί «τετάρτης γενεᾶς» δικαιωμάτων, ὁμοῦ μετά τῶν ἀτομικῶν καί πολιτικῶν, κοινωνικῶν καί πολιτισμικῶν καί τῶν δικαιωμάτων ἀλληλεγγύης, ἡ ὁποία ἀναφέρεται εἰς τήν ἐξασφάλισιν τῶν περιβαλλοντικῶν προϋποθέσεών των. Ὁ ἀγών διά τά δικαιώματα τοῦ ἀνθρώπου δέν εἶναι δυνατόν νά ἀγνοήσῃ τό γεγονός ὅτι αὐτά ἀπειλοῦνται ὑπό τῆς κλιματικῆς ἀλλαγῆς, ὑπό τῆς ἐλλείψεως ποσίμου ὕδατος, εὐφόρου ἐδάφους καί καθαρᾶς ἀτμοσφαίρας, καί γενικώτερον ὑπό τῆς «περιβαλλοντικῆς ὑποβαθμίσεως». Αἱ ἐπιπτώσεις τῆς οἰκολογικῆς κρίσεως ὀφείλουν νά ἀντιμετωπίζωνται ἐξόχως εἰς τό ἐπίπεδον τῶν δικαιωμάτων τοῦ ἀνθρώπου. Εἶναι αὐτονόητον ὅτι αὐτά, εἰς ὅλας των τάς πτυχάς καί διαστάσεις, ἀποτελοῦν ἀδιάσπαστον ἑνότητα καί ὅτι ἡ προστασία των εἶναι ἀδιαίρετος.

    Εἰς αὐτήν τήν συνάφειαν ἀνήκει καί ἡ ἀντιμετώπισις τῶν δεινῶν, τά ὁποῖα προεκάλεσεν ἡ ἐπίθεσις τῆς Ρωσσίας κατά τῆς Οὐκρανίας καί συνδέονται μέ φοβεράς οἰκολογικάς καταστροφάς. Κάθε πολεμική ἐνέργεια εἶναι καί πόλεμος κατά τῆς κτίσεως, εἶναι μία σοβαρωτάτη ἀπειλή κατά τοῦ φυσικοῦ περιβάλλοντος. 2 Ἡ ρύπανσις τῆς ἀτμοσφαίρας, τῶν ὑδάτων καί τοῦ ἐδάφους ἀπό τούς βομβαρδισμούς, ὁ κίνδυνος πυρηνικοῦ ὁλοκαυτώματος, ἀπελευθερώσεως ἐπικινδύνου ἀκτινοβολίας ἀπό τούς πυρηνικούς σταθμούς παραγωγῆς ἠλεκτρικῆς ἐνεργείας, ἡ καρκινογόνος σκόνη τῶν βομβαρδισμένων κτιρίων, ἡ καταστροφή τῶν δασῶν καί ἡ ἀχρήστευσις καλλιεργησίμων ἀγροτικῶν ἐκτάσεων, ὅλα αὐτά μαρτυροῦν ὅτι ὁ λαός καί τό οἰκοσύστημα τῆς Οὐκρανίας ὑπέστησαν καί συνεχίζουν νά ὑφίστανται ἀνυπολογίστους ἀπωλείας. Ἐπαναλαμβάνομεν γεγονυίᾳ τῇ φωνῇ: Νά τερματισθῇ ἀμέσως ὁ πόλεμος καί νά ἀρχίσῃ ὁ εἰλικρινής διάλογος.

    Ἐνώπιον ὅλων αὐτῶν τῶν προκλήσεων, ἡ Ἁγία τοῦ Χριστοῦ Μεγάλη Ἐκκλησία συνεχίζει τόν ἀγῶνα της ὑπέρ τῆς ἀκεραιότητος τῆς δημιουργίας, ἐν ἐπιγνώσει ὅτι ἡ μέριμνά της διά τό φυσικόν περιβάλλον δέν εἶναι μία πρόσθετος δρᾶσις εἰς τήν ζωήν της, ἀλλά οὐσιαστική ἔκφρασις καί πραγμάτωσίς αὐτῆς, ὡς προέκτασις τῆς Θείας Εὐχαριστίας εἰς ὅλας τάς μορφάς καί διαστάσεις τῆς καλῆς μαρτυρίας της ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ. Αὐτή ὑπῆρξε καί ἡ τιμαλφεστάτη παρακαταθήκη τοῦ εἰσηγητοῦ τῆς οἰκολογικῆς θεολογίας μακαριστοῦ Μητροπολίτου Περγάμου Ἰωάννου. Τιμῶντες τήν μεγάλην προσφοράν του, κατακλείομεν τό παρόν Πατριαρχικόν Μήνυμα ἐπί τῇ ἑορτῇ τῆς Ἰνδίκτου μέ ὅσα ἔγραψε περί τῆς Θείας Εὐχαριστίας ὡς ὁλιστικῆς ἀπαντήσεως εἰς τά σύγχρονα περιβαλλοντικά προβλήματα: «Στή Θεία Λειτουργία ὁ φυσικός καί ὑλικός κόσμος καί ὅλες οἱ αἰσθήσεις μετέχουν σέ μία ἑνότητα ἀδιάσπαστη. Δέν ὑπάρχει ἀντίθεση μεταξύ ὑποκειμένου καί ἀντικειμενικῆς πραγματικότητος, δέν ὑπάρχει ἡ κατακτητική στάση τοῦ ἀνθρώπινου λόγου ἀπέναντι στόν κόσμο πού τόν περιβάλλει. Ὁ κόσμος δέν κεῖται ἔναντι, δέν (εἶναι) ἀντικείμενον τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, ἀλλά προσλαμβάνεται καί κοινωνεῖται.Ἡ Θεία Κοινωνία εἶναι ὄχι μόνο ἕνωσή μας μέ τόν Θεό καί τούς ἄλλους, ἀλλά καί πρόσληψη τροφῆς, ἀποδοχή καί καταξίωση τοῦ φυσικοῦ μας περιβάλλοντος, ἐνσωμάτωση τῆς ὕλης καί ὄχι χρήση τῆς ὕλης. Ἡ ἱερότητα πού συνοδεύει αὐτή τή στάση, τό θεῖο ρῖγος πού διαπερνᾶ αὐτή τή σχέση, εἶναι ὁ ἀντίποδας τῆς Τεχνολογίας καί ἡ ἀπάντηση στό οἰκολογικό μας πρόβλημα. Ἡ Θεία Εὐχαριστία εἶναι καί γι᾿ αὐτόν τόν λόγο ὅ,τι καλύτερο ἔχει νά προσφέρῃ ἡ Ὀρθοδοξία στόν σύγχρονο κόσμο».

    Εὐλογημένον ἐκκλησιαστικόν ἔτος, ἀδελφοί καί τέκνα ἐν Κυρίῳ!

    Prot. No. 496

    † B A R T H O L O M E W

    BY GOD’S MERCY ARCHBISHOP OF CONSTANTINOPLE-NEW ROME AND ECUMENICAL PATRIARCH

    TO THE PLENITUDE OF THE CHURCH

    GRACE, PEACE AND MERCY FROM THE MAKER OF ALL CREATION

    OUR LORD GOD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST

    * * *

    Most reverend brother Hierarchs and beloved children in the Lord,

          With the grace of the Chief and Perfector of our faith, we are today entering a new ecclesiastical year and celebrating with psalms and hymns, for the thirty-fifth time, the Day of protection of the natural environment.

          We rejoice in the repercussions of the ecological initiatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate not only in the Christian world, but also in other religions, in parliaments and among politicians, in the field of civil society, science, the ecological movements and the youth. After all, the ecological crisis as a global challenge can only be addressed through international sensitization and mobilization.

          We further express our satisfaction that people have definitively understood the immediate connection between ecological and social issues, and especially the fact that the destruction of the natural environment primarily affects the poor among us. The combination of ecological and social activities constitutes the hope for our future because we can only have sustainable development and progress when we are simultaneously concerned about the integrity of creation and the protection of human dignity and human rights.

    It is characteristic that today there is an emphasis on “ecological expansion” of human rights. Indeed, people speak of a “fourth generation” of rights—along with individual and political, social, cultural as well as solidarity rights—which refers to the securing of their environmental preconditions. The struggle for human rights cannot ignore the fact that these rights are threatened by climate change, by the shortage of potable water, fertile soil and clean air, but also by “environmental degradation” in general. The consequences of the ecological crisis must be confronted above all on the level of human rights. It is self-evident that these rights, in all their aspects and dimensions, comprise an undivided unity and that their protection is inseparable.

    It is in this context that we must also include and appreciate the terrible effects created by the invasion of Russia in Ukraine, which is associated with horrible ecological devastation. Every act of war is also a war against creation inasmuch as it is a grievous threat against the natural environment. The pollution of the atmosphere, of water and earth by bombings, the risk of nuclear holocaust, the emission of dangerous radiation from nuclear plants producing electrical energy, the carcinogenic dust from exploding buildings, the destruction of forests and depletion of arable agricultural property—all these bear witness to the fact that the people and ecosystem of Ukraine have undergone and continue to undergo incalculable losses. We repeat emphatically: The war should cease at once and sincere dialogue should commence.

    Before all these challenges, the Holy Great Church of Christ continues its struggle for the integrity of creation, in full knowledge that its concern for the natural environment is not merely an added activity in its life, but its essential expression and realization as an extension of the Holy 2 Eucharist in every form and dimension of our good witness in the world. This was also the precious legacy of the pioneer of ecological theology, the late Metropolitan John of Pergamon. In recognizing his immense contribution, we conclude this Patriarchal Message on the occasion of the Feast of the Indiction with what he writes on the Holy Eucharist as a wholistic response to the current ecological problems: “In the Divine Liturgy, the natural and material world, along with all of the senses, participate in an inseparable unity. There is no antithesis between subject and objective reality, there is no stance of human mind’s conquest of the surrounding world. This world does not exist against, is not an object of man, but is assumed and communed. Holy Communion is not only our union with God and others, but also the assumption of food, the acceptance and appreciation of the natural environment, the incorporation and not merely consumption of matter. The sacredness that accompanies such an attitude, the divine shudder that pervades such a relationship, is the diametrical opposite of Technology and the answer to our ecological problem. The Holy Eucharist is, for this reason as well, the very best that Orthodoxy has to offer the contemporary world.”

    We wish you a blessed ecclesiastical year, brothers and children in the Lord!
